Discover the Ayurvedic secrets to stress-free, guilt-free, confusion-free, healthy, happy eating and living.... in language you can understand!
Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, teaches that at a physical level, all disease begins in the digestive tract due to an imbalanced digestive fire. This fire principle is called AGNI in sanskrit.
Like a cooking fire, AGNI can be balanced... it it can be imbalanced. It can be either too high/sharp, too low/dull or too variable (blowing in the wind).
When your AGNI is imbalanced, your food is either digested too much (over-cooked) or not enough (under-cooked), forming undigested food waste or AMA. Ama is a sticky, heavy, cold, damp, substance... like old mucous or clag glue! Ama builds up in the digestive tract hampering our AGNI further and can then 'overflow' into the body. When it moves into the subtle channels of the body, it effects our cellular nutrition and waste disposal and, combined with other factors, can cause pathological changes in the cells - the root cause of disease.
Strong, balanced AGNI is necessary for digestion, absorption and assimilation to take place so that our superficial tissues (blood, plasma, muscle and fat); deeper tissues (bone, marrow/nerve tissue and sexual reproductive tissue) and immune system can be nourished. Strong, balanced AGNI is necessary to 'burn up' any excess AMA or other wastes/toxins that we have floating around in our systems. It is also responsible for our temperature regulation, complexion and many other things. But most importantly, it is responsible for the digestion (in the mind) of our sensory impressions and life experiences.
If our AGNI is imbalanced, it is common to feel regularly uncomfortable in life - uncomfortable after eating certain foods, because we can't digest them.... and unsettled after experiencing certain moments or interactions in life, also because we can't digest them!
Imbalanced AGNI (especially Dull Agni) is also the root cause of weight gain. If our digestive fire and tissue fires aren't working properly, we create poor quality tissues in inappropriate amounts. A 'bottle neck' of tissue nutrition can occur between the superficial tissues and the deeper tissues leading to the excessive creation of immature fat tissue. At the same time, the bone, nerve and sexual reproductive tissue and immune system can become depleted/malnourished leading to issues like osteoporosis, nervous system issues, infertility and immune system problems.
Bringing your attention to strengthening and stabilising your AGNI is, arguably, the most effective preventative health measure you can establish in your life.
Developing strong, balanced AGNI will help to stabilise your weight, improve the quality of your tissues, prevent chronic disease, increase your energy and immunity, slow down the aging process, and will even improve the strength of your mind. Making better decisions gets easier and your can 'get over' or 'let go' of difficult experiences or emotions with greater ease.
But how do you balance your AGNI??
Ayurveda teaches us that ‘Like Increases Like’ and that the ‘Qualities’ of our food, thoughts, activities and environment directly effect the quality of our AGNI. The three main qualities of AGNI are Warm, Light and Slightly Oily.
By introducing these same qualities into our lives, predominantly through food, we can directly influence our metabolism. Simple.
The AGNI Course walks you through the fundamental Ayurvedic food and lifestyle practices designed to strengthen and stabilise AGNI step-by-step through 8 Modules.
I explain in detail why each practice is recommended and draw correlations to more Western viewpoints... which helps you to let go of some of your Western food baggage along the way.
The Course is designed for you to work through it at home, at your own pace... with this blog and the corresponding Facebook page providing ongoing contact, information, support and inspiration. If there are any questions I haven't answered, you can ask me here!
Once the practices I teach you have become a part of your life, you can totally let go of having to keep track of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, calories, kilojoules, additives, pH levels, GI levels, omega-3s, gluten, lactose, salicylates, amines, preservatives or anything else that people think they need to keep track of these days to be 'healthy'!
All you really need to keep track of is how you feel!
I want to help you switch off that part of your mind that thinks of food in terms of its micronutrients. Instead, I want you to start looking at food as food again... to get to know it from a different, more subtle perspective. And, I want to help you switch off that part of your mind that thinks of your body as a bunch of anatomical and physiological processes; as a linear machine where 1+1=2. Because it doesn't. Instead, I want you to start feeling into your body again...also getting to know it again from a different, more subtle perspective. And when you get to know your food.. and get to know your body... you will begin to understand how they relate to each other in a way you can't describe in words.
The practices I will teach you throughout the Course are all really easy and they just make sense! They will help to cultivate a strong, balanced digestive fire; increasing your ability to digest, absorb and assimilate your food and decreasing the production and accumulation of toxic wastes in your tissues and channels. As a result, you will:
You will also develop a greater connection to, and appreciation of nature - her cycles and her produce... and an ability to cook delicious and nourishing meals for you and your family.
I've written the AGNI Course in a very personal way, based on my own experiences of compromised digestion and stress/confusion around food. I've answered all of the questions that came up for me... and shared my experiences and difficulties along the way. Just in case you have them too. I don't want you to feel alone in this journey!
But... I've also tried to make it fun!! So that you just want to keep reading and learning.. and then re-reading and learning.
But, don't take it from me. Here are some testimonials...
“I absolutely love AGNI. It made me laugh - and cry! I found it so well written, easy to understand and it gave me such simple and practical ways to look after the health and happiness of myself and my family. It is has become my food bible.” Mel
“I started AGNI as I had lost my way in my relationship with food - I had placed my family and myself on a restrictive and negative diet for food intolerance reasons and couldn't find a way forward out of it. It was causing a lot of tension at home and I had stopped doing things I used to like to do. I found working through the course hugely liberating and interesting. Now at the end of it I'm feeling much healthier, happier, calmer, less controlling and anxious about what I and my family eat. I'm enjoying cooking and eating fresh and wholesome food in the knowledge that it's bringing me long term health and happiness, including foods that I thought we couldn't tolerate. I still have times of obsessiveness but I'm finding I'm more aware of this and more able to be flexible and 'let go'. I recommend this course to everyone - from those like me who need to readjust their relationship with eating, to those who want to lose weight or simply eat more healthily, to those who have health issues. It's an enlightening journey.” - Sonja
“I keep telling everyone how your AGNI Course has been one of the best things I have discovered in my life... so from my heart, I thank you.” Eliza
"I have been reading your book Agni and following your recommendations and just wanted to let you know how inspiring it has been for me. Kester is treating me also and together with his treatment and your helpful and insightful writing I am undergoing a beautiful and profound change in body, mind and spirit. You write so fluently. It feels like we are sitting down having a chat together. Your voice as a writer is warm, sensitive, clear and loving. Thank you so much.” Annie
"I have cooked something out of your cookbooks almost every day since July and I am totally captivated. I love the ritual of making my own ghee and after five months of consuming it nearly every day I am starting to feel nicely 'oiled' inside and out. The food gives me a profound sense of wellbeing and I can only say that it has been life-changing for me. It has given me a sense of 'joy' that I haven't experienced before. I feel like I've discovered my 'Aladdin's Cave'! These books are now amongst my most precious possessions. Your book Agni has been like reading a wonderful novel that you don't want to end!" - Julienne
To accompany the AGNI Course, I created a cookbook with the help of my hubby, Kester and my teacher, Doko. 'WARMTH: The Ayurvedic Cookbook' is a vegetarian cookbook inspired by a variety of cultural influences but based on the Ayurvedic principles of good digestion. It has been designed to bring greater feelings of warmth and kindness into your food, cooking and life....
The problem with a lot of Ayurvedic cookbooks is that they are overly complicated. This complexity can create confusion and dishearten even the most enthusiastic cook. We believe in making Ayurvedic cooking more accessible.... to everyone! So, when creating our cookbook, we chose quick and easy recipes that are appropriate for all constitutions.
The other problem with Ayurvedic cookbooks is they tend to be very ‘Indian’ and lack the cultural variety most Westerners are used to. The vegetarian recipes in WARMTH are inspired by a variety of cultural influences including Indian, English, Italian, Middle Eastern, Japanese and SE Asian. Afterall, the principles of good digestion can be found in all traditional cultures and their cuisine!

“I
think what makes AGNI such a unique and successful course is that it
teaches you to celebrate food and the role it plays in your life. The
lessons that Nadia has taught me have become permanent factors in my
approach to eating and food. What's surprised me is that, not only has
my gradual weight loss been sustainable, but I have very little
inclination to eat the types of foods that I might have prior to
commencing the course. Thanks to AGNI I have broken the cycle of guilt
and negative thoughts about food – I now celebrate eating and encourage
my family and friends to do the same.” - Sarah
“I
have just finished reading AGNI and can’t tell you how impressed I am
with its content. It creates an echo in my mind, something I have always
felt in my heart to be true, but could not express in words.
Congratulations for producing this course on Ayurvedic lifestyle, which
is easy to understand and inspires us to follow. I appreciated your
comments on your personal experience also, warts and all, as it brings
the reader closer to you and gives him/her encouragement rather than the
feeling of being isolated and out in the cold. Thinking of you and
wishing you all the best for the wonderful work you do.” Irene
“The AGNI Course makes Ayurvedic principles simple and easy to understand. I have enjoyed the learning experience and become more aware and in-tune with my body. As I applied each of the principles it really hit home that food truly is medicine. I highly recommend the AGNI Course to anyone who values life, wellbeing and passing this on to the next generation.” Linda
